In this session, James Kipping, Dominic Thackery, and Paul Mansfield from MHA will discuss various aspects of Family Investment Companies (FICs). They will cover why clients choose to establish a FIC, and why a FIC might not be appropriate in certain situations. The session will also delve into how to set up an FIC effectively, including different structuring methods such as the use of trusts, funding options, and the associated tax implications (cash, portfolios, properties), and potential anti-avoidance traps. Furthermore, they will explore how to adapt a current company into an FIC, investment options within an FIC, and alternative investment options if an FIC is not suitable.

Marianne Abib-Pech
Marianne Abib-Pech Author, Founder & Investor

Marianne Abib-Pech has led finance divisions in Shell, BHP Billiton, and GE. She has written the Financial Times Guide to Leadership, and advised businesses trying to enter ‘high-barrier’ countries such as Iran, former Soviet States, and China. Marianne speaks on all aspects of leadership and leadership strategy, including finding the next generation of leaders and women leaders. She looks at the challenges and make-up of the oil and gas sector as well as broader issues of change and transformation, investment, and developing markets.

John Gaskell
John Gaskell Head of Personal Financial Planning, ICAEW

John oversees ICAEW’s PFP Community and ICAEW’s Personal Financial Planning Advisory Group. His role involves liaising with the FCA and other regulators, working across different areas of ICAEW and with external stakeholders. He began his career as a private client stockbroker and investment manager before working as an independent financial adviser.

Simon Gray Head of Business, ICAEW

Simon is an ICAEW Chartered Accountant, who qualified with KPMG in Nottingham. After many years of volunteering, including District Society President, Chair of the Business Committee and Council Member, he joined ICAEW as Head of Business in December 2021. His background is in the recruitment, careers, membership and inward investment sectors. Simon has started and run his own businesses and served as a Non-Executive Director.

Simon Hoult
Simon Hoult Director and Head of Proposition, Colmore Partners

As well as providing advice to his existing and new clients, Simon is responsible for the Colmore Partners proposition which includes the quality of advice that is given to clients and the research of and selection of solutions and providers that we work with. He also mentors and trains upcoming talent within the business. In previous roles Simon has built and managed advisory teams, chaired advice committees and managed large client books.

Neville is a Chartered Financial Planner with over 21 years experience. Neville specialises in key person insurance and shareholder/partnership protection, helping businesses safeguard their most valuable assets and ensure continuity through risk management strategies. Neville works closely with business owners and stakeholders to develop tailored protection plans that address their unique needs, ensuring clients are well prepared through having a financial safety net should the unforeseen happen.

James Kipping
James Kipping Partner (ATT, CTA), MHA

James is a Private Client Tax Partner at MHA. James advises on a broad range of taxation matters concerning individuals, trusts, partnerships, and family companies including those with UK and international aspects. His expertise covers principally income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax planning as well as the restructuring of private companies, including mergers and demergers, acquisitions and MBOs, exit and remuneration planning.

John specialises in risk reduction in the FINPRO practice at Marsh. John delivers risk management advice and consultancy for UK and global professional service firm clients and leads the Marsh offering in this space. John joined Marsh in 2012 from Travelers where he was UK and Europe Senior Product Manager for professional indemnity insurance.

Paul Mansfield
Paul Mansfield Investment Manager, Chartered FSCI, MHA Caves Wealth

Paul holds the highly regarded Chartered Wealth Manager title and is also a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (CISI) with over 20 years’ experience in the financial services industry, specifically within portfolio management. As a member of MHA Caves Wealth investment committee, Paul actively oversees the firm’s asset allocation and investment strategy.

Craig Matthews

With a career in legal technology spanning 20+ years and a previous chairman of Legal Software Suppliers Association, Craig Matthews has dedicated his professional life to assisting law firms embrace technology. Craig is the CEO of LEAP Estates, the specialist Wills and Probate Division of LEAP Legal Software, the largest, independent provider of software to law firms in the world.

Johnny Ridd CEO, RQ

Johnny is CEO of RQ. Through its collaboration with ICAEW, RQ helps accountancy firms really get to know their business owner clients and collaborate seamlessly with their network of professional connections - solicitors, financial advisers, insurance brokers, mortgage brokers and others - to the ultimate benefit of their clients and their practice. In 2021, Chris was appointed as Chief Branch Officer. Chris has worked at Handelsbanken since 2006, and has undertaken several roles within the Bank including that of Branch Manager, Area Manager, Chief Financial Officer, and Regional Head. Before moving to the banking sector, Chris started his working life in football. After that, he moved into industry and spent five years as Operations Director for an AIM-listed public company specialising in direct sales.
